Side by side Journal P158
What was the situation?
When I worked at Food Company, I thought I changed my job.
What people tell you?
My father told me that he had helped me monetary support and I s
hould have resigned the Food Company.
Why did they tell you that?
Because he wanted to assist my decision.
Did you follow their advice?
Yes, I did.
What happened?
I resigned Food Company, and I got a new job.
Do you think you made the right decision?
Yes, I do.
Why ?
Because I get low salary at the food company. I couldn’t live s
uch a low salary. But I work at another job, My salary is higher
than Food company. If I have worked the food company, I would h
ave gotten married. Now I have a happy life.

Q:When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has noth
ing to do with success. Do you agree or disagree with the quotat
ion above?

A:
I disagree with the idea that when people succeed, it is because
of hard work and luck has nothing to do with success. Offcourse
Hard work is essential, but it is not enough. I will explain th
e reasons bellow.
First, if people want to pass the difficult examination, good lu
ck works important role. In Japan, very small number of people c
an succeed in the examination to be an attorney. So, even though
many people did hard study and try to the exam, all of them can
not succeed. And there is very little difference between the wi
nner and the loser. In that kind of exam, good luck plays import
ant part.
Second, in professional sports, to become a honorable player, go
od luck plays important part. For example, Ichiro has a reputati
on of very successful batter. Offcourse Ichiro practices very mu
ch, there are many players who does more practice than Ichiro. I
chiro can become hero because of good luck, like good circumstan
ce, family back ground, nationality or so on.
Third, in job hunting, hard work isn't enough to get good job. A
pplicants can not go into leading company without good luck. Alt
hough applicants study well and has many skill or knowledge, the
y will not succeed in job hunting without good personality. Comp
any selects applicants whose characteristics are suit to the com
pany. And personality is decided by good luck like environment,
inherits, experience in childhood and so on. People can not chan
ge their personality with hard work. Therefore people can not su
cceed in job hunting without good luck.
In conclusion, when people succeed, good luck plays very importa
nt part.
